NWBB 2014 Poster DRAFT

Dates for the 2015 Northwest Big Band Workshop

Here are the dates for the 2015 Northwest Big Band Workshop:
Sunday, April 26th (arrival date) – Saturday, May 2nd (departure date)
Once again, we will be based at the beautiful Manresa Castle Hotel again (for the fourth year).
We will, as always, have two bands—one musician on a part.  After filling two bands, there will be a waiting list.  Craig’s band will rehearse at the Castle.  Chuck’s band will again be rehearsing at The American Legion Hall (second year). The week-long schedule is similar to last year’s:

  • Sunday night “Welcome Dinner” at Manresa Castle followed by introductions (and jokes!)
  • Improvisational combo workshops after breakfast
  • Two big band rehearsals each day, 2 hours each (morning and afternoon)
  • Trombone choir after lunch
  • Saxophone quartet after lunch
  • Possibly a trumpet quintet (NEW offering) after lunch
  • Monday faculty concert after dinner at El Serape
  • Wednesday night all-camp dinner / jam session at The Roadhouse open to the public
  • Thursday night improv combos performance
  • Friday night big band dance concert open to the public after all-camp dinner at Manresa Castle
  • Informal, impromptu jam sessions throughout the week
  • Lots of good fellowship!

The good news! The fees will be the same as last year.   That is:

  • $920  (two to a room) for Manresa Castle Hotel,  and all meals, except for two lunches and two dinners on your own, or
  • $1097, for a private room (an additional $177 for the week), again, except for two lunches and two dinners on your own.
  • The “commuter fee” (for locals and others who wish to camp or have other places to stay) is $490, which includes three lunches.

You may register now to secure your chair for the workshop.  Because we do not take credit cards, we have split the dates for payments:

  • The workshop deposit for $150.  (Register early to insure your chair.)
  • The second installment of $385 is due January 5th,
  • And the final payment of $385 is due on March 15th
  • Half of the $150 deposit is non-refundable.

The NW Big Band mailing address is: PO Box 1406, Port Townsend, WA  98368.

Please invite any musicians you know who you think would be interested in joining the NW Big Band in Port Townsend.  We are offering a $50 discount as a “finder’s fee” for those musicians you can recommend who do attend.

But most of all we hope to see you!

NW Big Band for 2014

October 2, 2013

Dear Big Band Colleagues,

Plans are underway for the 2014 NW Big Band week in beautiful Port Townsend, Washington.  We hope everyone will want to come share another week of music, improvisation, and performance, along with a good deal of laughter and jokes.

The dates for the 2014 Big Band Workshop are:  Sunday, April 27th – May 2nd, 2014.  We will be based at Manresa Castle Hotel again (third year!)  One of the big bands will be rehearsing at the American Legion Hall (rather than the Methodist Church).  This means we will be set up and ready to go for the Friday night concert, and one of the bands will be accustomed to the room.  As before, the other big band will rehearse at Manresa.  The week-long schedule is the same as it has been in the past, with a Sunday evening welcome dinner & orientation, improve groups meeting after breakfast Monday through Thursday, a faculty concert Monday evening, an all-camp jam on Wednesday evening including the trombone choir, and saxophone quartet, improv group offerings on Thursday evening, and the big dance concert (open to the public) on Friday evening.

We will, as always, have two bands—one musician on a part.  Returning members will have priority.  After filling two bands, there will be a waiting list.

The good news! The fees will be the same as last year. That is:

  • $920  (two to a room) for Manresa Castle Hotel,  and all meals, except for two lunches and two dinners on your own, or
  • $1097, for a private room (or, an additional $177 for the week), again, except for two lunches and two dinners on your own.
  • The “commuter fee” (for locals and others who wish to camp or have other places to stay) is $490, which includes three lunches.

You may register now to secure your chair for the workshop.  The workshop deposit for $150 is due no later than November 1st, the second installment of $385 is due January 5th, and the final payment of $385 is due on March 15th.  Half of the $150 deposit is non-refundable.

Our mailing address is: PO Box 1406, Port Townsend, WA  98368.

We encourage you to invite any musicians you know who you think would be interested in joining the NW Big Band in Port Townsend.  A $50 tuition discount will be awarded to anyone who brings in a new participant.

For questions, call either Sally at 360-379-3395 (before October 11th, and after November 2nd), or Owen, 360-385-5374.

We hope all is well with you, and we look forward to seeing you next spring.

Warmest regards,

Sally, Owen, Chuck, Craig & Rex

Northwest Big Band is Alive and Well!

There was great concern in the NWBB community when our director, Elmer Ramsey, retired at the conclusion of the 2012 session.  However, the faculty and band members had learned many great lessons from Elmer & Elaine, and we all pitched in to help make the 2013 NWBB workshop an enjoyable and rewarding musical experience for all participants.  The workshop proceeded as usual in beautiful Port Townsend, WA in April of 2013, and it was a rousing success!  Two complete big bands presented a dance concert at the end of the week, which dancers and listeners alike greatly enjoyed.  Three combos encouraged everyone to try their hand at improvisation.  The Wednesday night jam session was packed with eager participants & fans, and the trombone choir and saxophone quintet each put on lively performances.
Plans are now being finalized for the 2014 Northwest Big Band Workshop.  We hope you will join us for this annual celebration of music making.  Please email craig@craigbuhler.com for more information.
